JTHS students headed to State Competition after placing in Regional Drafting Contest

Joliet Township High School students are headed to the State Drafting Competition after placing in the Regional Drafting Contest.  The drafting contest, a partnership with Joliet Junior College, was held virtually this year with students competing at various times from February 15 to early March.

Fifty-two students competed from five area high schools in eight divisions including Introductory to Board, Introductory to Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), 3D CAD Modeling, Assembly Modeling, Machine CAD, Architectural CAD (2D), Architectural CAD (3D), and Architectural Board. Each student had two hours to complete their division based drafting problems.

Joliet Central teacher and team sponsor Dale West said, “The entire competition was a great experience for all of the students.  This year was a unique real-world experience and has taught my students how to work through virtual desktops and cloud-based Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software.  Many of them spent multiple hours practicing for the competition.  I commend all my students for their hard work and commitment to being successful.  As their teacher, it has been very rewarding to see their growth and their CAD skills improve as they progress through our drafting program.”

Any student who placed 1st or 2nd in a division advanced to the State Drafting competition. Teachers were also permitted to advance their top two students from each division to the State Competitions.

Joliet Central students advancing to State are Jason Dworak and Alex Herzog, Intro to CAD Division; Briana Reyes and Justin Ortiz, 3D CAD Modeling Division; and Breadon Mink and Andrew Darley, Assembly Modeling.
Additional Regional Competitors from Central include Efrain Muniz, Alexis Villagomez, and Victor De Los Santos.  The Joliet Central High School Team Sponsor is Dale West.

Joliet West students advancing to State are Macy Overall and Victor Villalobos in the 2D Architecture Division.

Additional Regional Competitors from West are Tori Smith, Ta’na Bedenfield and Josh Alison, Intro to CAD Division; and Megan Miller, Evelynn Mantia and Tristan Wegnar, 3D CAD Modeling Division.  The Joliet West High School Team Sponsor is Jeff Biernacki.

West added, “Thank you to Joliet Junior College for hosting and coordinating the virtual logistics.  Scotty Boudreau and Laura Cotner are two of the main people at JJC who set the entire event up and make sure it runs seamlessly.  They also bring in a set of proctors and judges who donate their time and help make the competition the best it can be.”  View the 2021 IDEA Awards Ceremony created by Scotty Boudreau here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzaFgx09U9Q.

If JTHS students are interested in CAD, 3D modeling or 3D printing, they should speak to their counselor about enrolment in Tech CAD.
