Superintendent’s Message – Oct. 22, 2021

Dear Parents and Students,

The Joliet Key Club held an awesome Trunk or Treat yesterday. Pictures are HERE. In addition, congratulations to our students who were selected to the ILMEA District 1 Ensemble. You can read about it HERE.

Important information is below.

Noxious Sprays
As a reminder, noxious sprays, such as mace and pepper spray, are not allowed on school grounds. These items can be construed as weapons and students found to have noxious spray in their possession will receive disciplinary measures, up to and including expulsion from school.

Teens & Vaping Presentation Nov. 17 at 5 p.m.
Parents from all JTHS campuses are invited to attend a special presentation, Teens & Vaping: What’s Behind the Smoke. The event takes place from 5 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 17 and kicks off in the Joliet West High School Little Theatre. Enter the building through Door 5, the cafeteria entrance off Larkin Avenue. View more information about the presentation HERE.

R3 Neighborhood Meetings
Will County, the City of Joliet, and local community organizations, including JTHS, are participating in a R3 (Restore, Reinvest & Renew) Collaborative Assessment and Planning Process. As part of this process, you are invited to attend upcoming neighborhood meetings to address the needs in our community.  For meeting dates/times and more information, click HERE.

Digital Safety Webinar October 28 – Helping Your Child Navigate Online Aggression
The Illinois Attorney General’s Office is hosting a webinar on Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. Parents will learn about the issue of cyberbullying, as well as how to detect if their children are being victimized or are victimizing others. Parents should leave this session feeling empowered to teach their children how to appropriately respond to online incidents. To register and for more information, click HERE. Additional cyberbullying resources for parents are HERE.

Transition Center Community-Wide Open House - Nov. 18 from 4 to 6 PM
Tour the new Transition Center at an Open House from 4 to 6 p.m. on November 18. The new building is located at 128 Collins Street across from the Subway/Walgreens Strip Mall.  Take a tour, view student presentations, shop for Transition Center and Steelmen Merchandise, and more.  Additional info HERE.

Pack the House! Special Olympics Basketball Game - Nov. 18 @ 6:30 PM
Join us for Pack the House at 6:30 p.m. on November 18! This district-wide event is designed to bring students, staff, parents, and community together to support our schools by packing the Central Gymnasium full of attendees! The Pack the House event features the Special Olympics Basketball Game and includes game, raffles, musical entertainment, a special appearance from the Steelmen mascot, and more. There is no charge to attend the event, but donations are accepted at the door. All proceeds benefit Special Olympics.

Next week is Principal Appreciation Week. If you would like to share a message of appreciation, with Principals Hallihan and Gibson or Assistant Principals Locke, Villaflor, Narducci, or Wooten, email addresses are listed in our staff directory HERE.

JTHS Board of Education Meeting November 16
Parents, students, members of our community, and the public are invited to attend Board of Education meetings. The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting is November 16 at 7 p.m.  Agendas are posted at least 48 hours prior to the meeting and can be found HERE. Due to COVID restrictions, the capacity limit for board meetings is 60 visitors. Visitors will be admitted to the meeting on a first come basis. Board of Education meetings are also livestreamed and can be viewed HERE. Masks must be worn at all times while inside JTHS buildings and visitors must certify that they do not have COVID or COVID like symptoms. The public may comment during the public comments section on any agenda item or topics related to the district; however, this is not an opportunity for conversation. Visitors must conduct themselves with respect and civility towards others. Individuals wishing to make public comment must sign-up for public comment upon arrival and before 6:50 p.m. on-site at the JTHS Administrative Center.
