JTHS High School Placement Exam

During the weeks of September 23-October 4, all area public junior high or middle schools will be taking the PSAT 8/9 test for placement into Joliet Township High School. 

All prospective students must take the PSAT 8/9 prior to 9th grade registration in January.  Public students who have missed testing at their school or private students must attend make up testing:

Students are to arrive by 7:30 am and are to be dropped off at the main entrance located on Herkimer Street. 

Testing schedule is from 7:30 am-12:00 pm (testing may end prior to 12:00 pm). Late students will not be allowed to enter the testing room and will have to make up testing over Winter Break.

Students are to bring two #2 pencils and a calculator (cell phone calculators are not permitted).

The placement exam, PSAT 8/9 consists of 3 components:

Reading  55 minutes 42 questions
  • All Reading Test questions are multiple choice and based on passages.
  • Some passages are paired with other passages.
  • Informational graphics, such as tables, graphs, and charts, accompany some passages—but no math is required.
  • Prior topic-specific knowledge is never tested.
Writing and Language 30 Minutes 40 Questions 
  • All questions are multiple choice and based on passages.
  • Some passages are accompanied by informational graphics, such as tables, graphs, and charts—but no math is required.
  • Prior topic knowledge is never tested.
Math 60 Minutes  38 Questions 
  • Most math questions will be multiple choice, but some—called grid-ins—ask you to come up with the answer rather than select the answer.
  • The Math Test is divided into two portions: Math Test–Calculator and Math Test–No Calculator.
  • ·Some parts of the test include several questions about a single scenario.


A student’s score will be reported as the following:

This is based upon the Reading and Writing/Language test

Joliet Township High School will utilize the ERW score for placement into 9th grade English, Science and Social Science. The Math score will be used for placement into Math. Additionally, teacher recommendations are considered for placement into classes.
