Joliet West Wrestler Wyatt Schmitt took 2nd in the country at Fargo Nationals in Greco-Roman Wrestling in the 16U 285 lb. Division last weekend, earning All-American status and becoming a national finalist. Fargo is an annual national wrestling tournament that takes place in Fargo, North Dakota every summer that hosts competitions in men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman, and woman's freestyle. Schmitt, a junior at West, qualified to be a member of Team Illinois in the men's freestyle & men's Greco-Roman divisions after winning a freestyle state championship on April 23 at Marmion Academy in Aurora and placing 3rd in the state in Greco-Roman wrestling on April 30 at Dekalb High School in Dekalb. Schmitt is the first Joliet wrestler to achieve this feat Since Louisa Schwab (Class of 2020) did so in 2019, Schwab was 1st in 2017, 2nd in 2018 & 3rd in 2019.

“Wyatt has had an amazing high school career at Joliet West winning a fresh-soph state title as a freshman and becoming an IHSA State Qualifier as a sophomore,” said Joliet West Head Wrestling Coach Chuck Rumpf. “He has followed up these accomplishments with his hard work and commitment to off-season wrestling which has now led to him becoming a national finalist and All-American. With these achievements, Wyatt is representing Joliet West with pride and showcasing our school on the national stage. We are extremely proud of him.”
