The Joliet West High School Library has continued its tradition of career exploration by hosting the Arts and Communication Academy Week from December 4th through 8th to allow students to gain a more hands-on experience beyond the classroom.

The Arts & Communication Academy Week consisted of the following events:

Monday, 12/4 – Career Panel: Students heard from community members working in the fields of journalism, radio, theater, music, and graphic design.

Tuesday, 12/5 – Theater Performance Day: Two Speech Team students performed during each advisory period.  They also led students from advisory classes in theater activities such as improv and charades.

Wednesday, 12/6 – Colossal Crafternoon: Students from Joliet West’s art classes assisted their peers in a day dedicated to various art forms in the library.  Students from advisory classes had the opportunity to work with a variety of art mediums and learned about the art classes available to them.

Thursday, 12/7 – This day was dedicated to photography, technology and art.  Students from photography and journalism partnered to explore various recording, film, photography and other art tech tools in the library.

Friday, 12/8 – Music Day in the Library: The JTHS orchestra performed in the library.  Then, during advisories, students from band and orchestra provided an instrument “petting zoo” for their peers.  Students from advisory classes had the opportunity to play various instruments with instruction from musicians in the band and orchestra.  At the end of the day, students stopped in the library to hear a live performance from the Joliet West Women’s choir.

Photography teacher Mr. Chuck Rumpf said, “The academy week is great for our students because it breaks their normal routine and creates a natural connection between what we learn in the classroom with with hands-on activities and valuable conversations. The librarians did a great job.”

All week students had photography, art, and issues of Tiger Tales Newspaper, West’s Literary magazine, and yearbooks on display.

Student Cheyenne Helis said, “I’m considering a career in arts and communication, and I really enjoyed getting to try out different tech tools in the library that I had never used before. This was really fun!”

The Arts & Communication Academy Week is the third of a series of Academy Weeks that Joliet West librarians, Amy Lingafelter and Amy Walsh, host in collaboration with academy coordinators throughout the year to promote career exploration among Joliet West High School students.
