The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) would like to make you aware of the following information, which may be of interest to you and/or your college-bound students and their families.
College Awareness & Preparation (CAP) Resources Available for 2012-13 FAFSA Cycle
The 2012-13 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) cycle, including FAFSA on the Web, opened on January 1, 2012. The Central Processing System (CPS) began processing 2012-13 FAFSA data on Tuesday, January 3. Details regarding the 2012-13 application cycle may be accessed via the Applying for Financial Aid section of the e-Library at collegeillinois.org.
College-bound seniors and parents please check out the College Awareness & Preparation (CAP) page at collegeillinois.org for information regarding resources that are available to help students complete the financial aid process. Several events, including FAFSA completion seminars, will take place across the State of Illinois from now through March. Families should attend the event that best fits their schedule.
CAP is a comprehensive effort of the Illinois Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (ILASFAA), Inc., the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC) and ISAC. Formerly known as Financial Aid Admission/Awareness Month (FAAM), CAP strives to fulfill its mission through a series of workshops, seminars and statewide support with partners from all sectors of education in the State of Illinois.
Junior and Seniors:
It is never too earlier to think about College Financial Planning. You have two opportunities to learn more about financial aid. The first session is at Joliet West High School on January 10, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. More information about the presentation can be found online at www.MakingItCount.com. Another session will be held at Joliet Central High School on January 24, 2012 at 7pm in the Auditorium. Mrs. Mary Shaw, Director of Financial Aid will do a presentation.

Nominations Sought for History Teacher of the Year Awards
Do you know an outstanding teacher passionate about American history? Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year Award nominations honoring middle and high school teachers can be made now at http://www.gilderlehrman.org/nhtoy. State winners each receive $1,000, and the national winner receives $10,000. All winners receive an archive of materials for their school library, donated in their honor. All full-time educators who teach American history are eligible.
Nominations can be made by a student, parent, colleague, principal or school administrator familiar with the teacher's work. The nomination deadline for the 2012 award is Feb. 1. The award is sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute, Preserve America and the History channel. One winner will be chosen from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. Territories and Department of Defense schools. These winners will be considered for the national award.
