Hello, and welcome to the Joliet West Boys' Tiger Cross Country website. I am excited about this opportunity to lead the Tigers XC team once again. Coach Almon and I have high expectations for the boys this year as we let go of our seniors and welcome in our new runners. We look forward to hearing about Sam Wietlispach and Tom Sears as they continue running at the collegiate level.

My philosophy about coaching cross country is that all runners have potential, and it is our duty to help the boys reach theirs. Runners have different needs, and by getting to know our runners as students, athletes, and as young men, we intend to help them become successful.  We want the athletes to know the purpose for each run, and we want to create self-directed runners. They should know a variety of stretches and drills they can do on their own; they should know how to create meals to keep them fueled and healthy, and they should know how to listen to their bodies to know their potential for any given race or practice. It is our job to prepare them, and as teachers with more than twenty years of combined experience, we will be teaching and coaching our runners all year.

One reason I took on the challenge of Joliet West Tigers XC is because I have been a lifelong runner myself. I ran Cross Country and Track at Brother Rice High School in Chicago, and have since participated in dozens of 5Ks, 8Ks, a half marathon and two Chicago Marathons (2006, 2007). My hope is that our runners compete hard during their time at Joliet West and then continue running into their adult lives both for the enjoyment and the health benefits running provides. Coach Almon has been running for six years and has coached football, bowling, and softball for more than twelve years. He brings his wide range of strength and speed drills to the team from his other coaching endeavors. He has competed in four marathons, has completed the Chicago-to-Peoria team run five times, and has raced to the top of the Sears Tower twice.

We encourage families and friends to come out and support the Tiger XC Team at our meets, which are linked on each meet date on the Google Calendar. If you have any questions or concerns about the team, the practices, or the meets, please email me at bnewman@jths.org or call me at school at (815)774-1696 and I will gladly respond.

Thanks, and we look forward to a great year.

Brian Newman

2011 Season Highlights

Results from the Sectional on Saturday, October 29th

The Tigers XC season came to an end on Saturday at the Quincy Sectional. We took 13th out of the 21 teams and 15 additional individuals. Hugo took 25th, just missing a trip downstate. While we were all disappointed that no one qualified, Hugo's leadership shone through as he shared with the team how this should motivate us for the upcoming track season and the summer running in 2012. The coaching staff was all proud of the team and, like them, looks forward to the upcoming seasons. Our two seniors, Angel--who will enter the track season in the best conditioning of his high school career--and Anthony--who can use this time to heal up from an IT-band issue--will be missed next year. At least we get a track season to see what they can do.

Results from Regionals on Saturday, October 22nd

This meet was not incredibly dramatic, as 7 of the 8 teams moved on to Sectionals, as did the next 5 individuals on that 8th team. The Tigers placed 6th, and got strong performances from many of the usual suspects. Dan nearly tied his PR, Hugo's getting healthy again, and Angel is coming into his own, setting a PR by over 40 seconds. Theo earned our Runner of the Week honors, bouncing back from his Conference time of 18:05 at Channahon to run a 17:15 this week. This is not to take away from Sabby's 17:29, another PR for him as he really has come on strong at the end of the season.  Next up: SECTIONALS.

Results from Andrew Invite on Tuesday, October 18th

The guys who ran this meet as their final meet of the year gave it their best. We had PR's come from Mike Skora, who ran an 18:23, and Stephen Downen, who PR'd again with a time of 18:49. Paul won the Eliya-Matt-Paul challenge after Eli fell at the sound of the gun to start the race. No one was injured; all runners survived this mishap. The coaching staff is really proud of the guys who gave their best shot at this meet. Next up: REGIONALS.

Results from Conference on Saturday, October 15th

The Joliet West TIgers took 4th at Conference on Saturday, with PR's coming from 8 runners. At the conclusion of the meet, we had our top 7 runners for October 22nd's Regional competition. Runners of the meet included Nick Pippenger, who PR'd by over 40 seconds, and Dan Treasure, who earned All-Conference honors by placing 13th. The top 16 earned medals, and Dan was one. He ran a 16:21, showing just what kind of potential this freshman has.

Results from the West Chicago Invite on Friday, October 7th

With only 6 teams, this was a small meet on a beautiful course. After a tough week of practice, some runners struggled to get their legs; however, a few runners rose to the challenge and nearly matched their PR or even beat it. Two runners, Mike Skora and "The Maverick," (Shane Maverick Donaldson-Curry) not only beat their PRs by 33 seconds and 1:22 respectively, but they were voted our Runners of the Meet. Mike took 5th in the open race and Maverick finished as strong as we've ever seen him. The team had a strong week of practice and we expect those efforts to payoff as we move toward the final few weeks of the season.

Results from the Joe Mortimer F/S Invite on Thursday, September 29th

There were nearly 40 teams at the Invite, and the guys placed 9th overall. While this was not our best meet of the season, it gave the runners a sense of hwo they stack up against some of the better teams in our area. Dan Treasure placed in the top 20, and strong performances were turned in by Sabby Arroyo and Nick Pippenger.

Results from the Tinley Part Invite on Saturday, September 24th

Like most teams, we have a few runners recovering from injury, so we didn't have a full roster. That said, we got some strong performances from about half the group while others failed to reach the time from Peoria the week before. Hugo placed 8th overall with Dan coming in 22nd in the varsity race. Sabby got his first taste of varsity and ran his best time of the season, falling just 12 seconds outside of our top 7. Sean Youell earned Runner of the Meet honors by bouncing back from injury in Peoria to run his best XC time during his two years at West with a 17:34, placing him 3rd now just ahead of freshman Theo Prieboy. Angel Rosario jumped into the top 7 this week and broke 18 minutes for the first time. Also running PRs at this meet were Matt Ryan and Paul Koerner. At the JV level, strong performances came from Nick, Stephen, and Maverick, who all ran PRs, along with Patrick O'Connell, who broke 19 minutes for the first time. With October near, we have a very competitive 10 runners vying for that top 7 spot at Conference and beyond.

Results from the Richard Spring Invitational in Peoria on Saturday, September 17th

The running Tigers took advantage of the perfect weather on the perfect course and nearly every runner had a PR. Captain Hugo Hernandez became the first runner in the two-year existence of the new Tiger XC program to run under 16 minutes, clocking a 15:57 in Peoria. This earned him our runner of the meet honors. Freshman Dan Treasure once again had a PR, coming in at 16:37. This talented tandem was joined by outstanding efforts from freshman Theo Prieboy, Joey Rios, Jake Godlewski, and Anthony Schalk, all going under 18 minutes for the first time this year. Angel Rosario knocked over 30 seconds off last week's time to finish at 18:03. Paul Koerner came back well from some minor injuries this week. Joliet West is probably one of the only teams in the state to have a baseball catcher finish an XC race under 20 minutes with Kyle Chavez running strong, and Eli Prieboy cut a few seconds off his best time. Other big F/S performances included Nick Pippenger, Eric Diaz, and Matt Sova, all going under 19 minutes for the first time. Trevor Kloberdanz and Stephen Downen keep getting better and PR'd as well. In what will surely be the biggest meet of the season (64 teams), the Tigers showed how far our program has come and the potential we have in the future.

Results from the 20th Steelmen Invite on Saturday, September 10th

The Tigers had a strong day today, finishing 9th in F/S, and 7th in Varsity out of 15 teams. More importantly, guys are improving. Our runners of the meet were Patrick O'Connell at the F/S level, knocking 50 seconds off his time last week and more than that on the same course from 2 weeks ago. Also meeting the coaches' expectations was Angel Rosario, an excellent sprinter trying XC for the first time. This race showed that he's learning pace, as his splits were only 17 seconds apart and he knocked a minute off of last week's time. Dan Treasure PR'd again, finishing in the top 20 and earning a medal with a 16:42. Hugo was a few seconds behind after getting knocked down, literally, early in the race. The next 5 varsity runners finished within less than 20 seconds of each other. Great pack mentality, with Sean getting back to form, Anthony getting close, Jake getting healthy, and Joey--like Angel--finding out how to transition from a track sprinter to an XC athlete. Next week at Peoria will be a great opportunity to compete against the great teams of Illinois on the State course.

Results from the TF South 40th Annual Rich Dust Invite on Saturday, September 3rd

On Saturday, September 3rd, the Tigers have made big improvements in just the course of a few days. On a day over 90 degrees, the Tigers XC team earned a 4th place finish at both the JV and the Varsity levels in a field of almost 20 teams. Sebastian Arroyo earned our Runner of the Meet award, knocking nearly a minute off his time and finishing first for the JV. He placed 14th and earned a trophy for himself. Another giant improvement came from Trevor Kloberdanz, who knocked more than a minute off his time. Eric Diaz, slotted to run the open for his first XC race ever, filled in for a missing runner and placed 4th, helping the team earn those much needed points. At the varsity level, Hugo placed 11th and broke 17:00, while freshman Dan Treasure knocked 27 seconds off of Tuesday's time to run a 17:01. The pack mentality worked well, with our 3-7 runners finishing within 20 seconds of each other. Check out the YouTube clip of our day.

The Tigers started out the year strong, with Dan Treasure leading the frosh/soph. Strong performances were also turned in by Theo Prieboy and Sean Youell. At the varsity level, Hugo Hernandez placed 11th overall, with Anthony Schalk taking the third-best overall time on the team.  There were many Tiger runners new to high school cross country, and the coaches were really impressed by Joey Rios, Angel Rosario, Kyle Chavez, and Trevor Kloberdanz. All of these runners played other sports at Joliet West but decided to give XC a try and did very well for their first meet.

Summer Running 2011

Our summer running schedule concluded at the start of school, and the coaching staff would like to congratulate the XC Captain, Hugo Hernandez, on logging 500 miles this summer. Joining him in the 500 mile club is newly appointed co-captain, Anthony Schalk, one of the Tigers' few seniors and a good leader as well. We had one 300 mile club runner: Matt Sova (who finished around 350). He only began running in January 2011 for track and has really proven himself to be a hard worker and a talented runner.
