2014 Season Highlights
The team headed to the Quincy Sectional on Halloween afternoon. See the results here. We loved the course with its rolling hills and great sight lines for spectators. The lineup for Sectionals included Dan, Mario, Sabby, Dylan, Josh, Stephen and Theo. The field was strong, and the team placed 9th overall. While we didn't qualify for State as a team, Dan will be returning to State for his last opportunity to run at Detweiller. While we didn't achieve our ultimate goal of making State as a team, we learned a lot and look forward to seeing how our young core develops in the off-season.
Our Regional roster as a part of the State Series includes the following runners: Dan Treasure, Sabby Arroyo, Mario Scarcelli, Josh Pearson, Dylan Deardurff, Rafael Hernandez, Cole Long, Theo Prieboy, Stephen Downen, Sezar Carrillo, Jeremy Sikes and Ariel Lopez. Results from the Regional can be found here. Our plan was to run as a pack for two miles, and the team executed the plan perfectly. We finished with a 20-second split on 1-5. We took 4th and advanced on to the Sectional meet.
Saturday, October 18: SWSC Blue Conference Meet. Results can be found here. In the 5 years since JTHS athletics separated, we've never finished in the top 3 in conference, but today we took a convincing 3rd place. We had 2 All-Conference runners in Dan and Mario. For the JV, we put 3 in the top 16 with Jeremy, Ariel and Cole getting it done. We still had 7 PR's today, even though the course was a mess. Mav, Jason, and Sabby all came back covered in mud. Stephen had been hurt during the week but showed why he deserved a chance at the top 7 when he broke 17 minutes for the first time. For some, the season ended, and for others, the season continues with Regionals and beyond.
After Locktoberfest, we knew we had to bounce back, and we did at the Benet Invite in Lisle. See the results here. We had 31 guys race, and 24 of them earned a PR on Saturday, October 11th. The varsity took 3rd place, with Dan leading the way followed by Josh Pearson (who PR'd by about 30 seconds), followed by Sabby, Mario, Rafael, and Dylan. This is the first time we've put 6 guys under 17 minutes in the same race. In the JV race, Cole decided he'd celebrate being 15 by breaking 17 minutes for the first time. He was followed by Ariel and Jeremy, the 3 who have been exchanging top finishers all season. In the open, we got great efforts from Stephen and Sezar, who took 2nd and 3rd. Mav PR'd by over 30 seconds. Good day for Tigers Distance.
Locktoberfest punched us in the face on Saturday, October 4th. Results can be found here. Many of the state's best teams lined up to race in one of the earliest snows in recent memory. This was not a good day for the Tigers. The team knew it. The coaches knew it. Every week can't be a PR, so we learned some lessons this day and will see if we can bounce back at Benet. Despite the stacked field and harsh conditions, the JV took 11th out of 25 teams. That's rarely something to applaud, but these guys showed something against some great competition. Ariel took 31st in a field of over 160. Can't wait to see how the JV team develops in the coming years.
It's tough to follow Peoria, but on Saturday, September 27th we headed to Midlothian Meadows. Results can be found here. We weren't sure what to expect, but what happened was a 3rd place varsity finish. Great team effort. Dan, Sabby, Mario and Dylan all under 16:50. For JV, Ariel, Jeremy, Cole, Chris and Andrew, our reliable top 5, followed the pack on a wrong turn (no one went the right way) and added about 20 seconds to their times.
We made our annual trip to Peoria to run on the State course on Saturday, September 20th. The results can be found here. As usual, the course was fast, and many runners found a PR (some found a PR for a mile). For JV, Cole led the way followed by Ariel and Chris. It was a good chance to run against the biggest field they'll ever face at over 60 teams. For the varsity, Sabby earned his season PR running 16:11, and the team earned its highest finish at 32 that we've had in 5 years.
At the Steelmen Invite on September 13 at our home course in Channahon, the conditions were muddy but our runners still performed well, with more than half the team establishing a new PR. Results can be found here. The JV finished just out of the top 3, placing 4th, led by Jeremy (18th), Chris (19th) and Ariel (21st). All 7 ran well, with Cole, Jon, Andrew and Nathan making it a PR for the entire JV group. At the varsity level, Sabby took home a 13th place trophy and a PR. Dan jumped 40 seconds from the week before to take 2nd for the team. In the Open, Dylan found himself on the medal stand with an 8th-place finish, and Jakob got a new PR by over 30 seconds from last year.
The Tigers returned to Glenwood-Lansing Meadows on Saturday, September 6, for the TF South Rich Dust Invite. Results can be found here. The course was sloppy, with ankle-deep water in some areas, but the team did well. JV has now placed 3rd at each of our meets. The effort was led by Ariel, Chris and Jeremy, with PRs coming from Ariel and Chris. The Varsity placed 4th out of 14 teams and had a 1-5 split of only 23 seconds, led again by Sabby, who joined the top 5 runners all placing in the top 30. In the Open, Stephen and Theo took 2nd and 3rd to earn trophies.
We raced in Normal, IL at Maxwell Park on Saturday, August 30th. You can find the team results here and the individual results here. Just as in the first meet, we were not asked to designate a top 7, so all JV and Varsity all raced together. We put 3 runners in the top 18 with Sabby and Sergio separated by a second, and Mario 10 seconds behind them for 13, 14, and 18. This was also Sezar's first appearance in the top 5 of a Varsity race. At the JV level, Chris, Ariel, Cole, Jon, and Ariel were separated by 5 seconds. We like the progress of the JV so far.
We hosted our first meet on Tuesday, August 26 at Community Park in Channahon. You can find the results here. Coach Almon and I worked together to setup the course, which required a rerouting of the original course, resulting in a 2.95-mile course. The conditions were muddy, but the team worked through it. Our new runners got a sense of what competing in the SWSC really means. While Varsity took 6th in our 16-team conference, the JV took 3rd. We are excited to see how they progress this season.
