Joliet West to Host Tiger 5K
January 28, 2010
Joliet West High School’s Business Management and Information Systems Academy will host the Tiger 5K at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 24 at Chicagoland Speedway, 500 Speedway Blvd.
The Tiger 5K, known previously as the Steelmen 5K, is in its fourth year of operation. “Joliet West and Central will have separate sports and activities next year. Because the Tigers are back, we felt it appropriate to change the name of the race,” said 5K sponsor Brian Newman, who pointed out that all other aspects of the race remain the same.
Tickets prices are $15 for students ages 10-18, $20 for adults, and $25 for participants who register on the day of the event. Race day registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Walkers are encouraged to participate as well, and will begin walking one lap, 1.5 miles, after the runners begin. Strollers are also allowed.
In addition to the run, there will be an awards presentation, food, a FREE kids’ race, carnival games and a raffle.
The event is organized by more than 60 student volunteers who plan and market the event and select the charity.
All proceeds of the event will go to the MorningStar Mission’s Jump on the Bus Program. “This program provides back-to-school supplies for K-12 students in Will County,” said Newman. “We agreed on this charity becauset serves the student population of Will County by helping students and families prepare for the school year.”
Online registration and sponsorship opportunities will be available through April 20 at www.freewebs.com/tiger5k. Mail-in registration and sponsorships should be postmarked by April 20 and can be sent to Joliet West High School, c/o Missy Stapleton, 401 N. Larkin Avenue, Joliet, IL 60435. Call 815-727-6926 for more information.
“This is an event that gets better every year,” says Newman. “Over the last three years we have raised $27,000 for local charities. "We hope the generosity of the community and the runners continues this year as well."
