Events for the week included:

- Tuesday – Health Career Activity Stations with USF Nursing Faculty
- Wednesday - Healthy Snacks Taste Test Day & Focus Groups
- Thursday – Alternative Medicine Day with meditation and aromatherapy
- All Week - Dueling Fitbit Challenge
Librarian Amy Walsh said, “We are so thankful to all our special guests for sharing their knowledge with our students. The purpose of the Library’s Academy Weeks is to provide career information to students through a variety of resources and hands-on learning experiences.”
On Monday, health professionals spoke on a panel to share about their diverse experiences in the fields of chiropractic medicine, nursing, environmental medicine, physician’s assistant, athletic training and public health.
On Tuesday, Nursing faculty from the University of St. Francis hosted five hands-on sessions focused on 1) dressing changes, sterile gloves and gown, 2) healthy diet, 3) blood pressure, 4) disability awareness & stress management, and 5) physical therapy exercises.
Health Careers Instructor Mary Spata, RN, said, “Our JT students are fortunate to have this partnership with USF. Students are not only exploring the various labs, but they have the opportunity to collaborate with the USF nursing professors and learn more about the college and the various programs available.”
Speaking from a student perspective, Joliet West sophomore Cecilia Ciuffini said, “I learned a lot from the guest speakers and stations this week. I think it’s really cool that we get to experience these kinds of career-building opportunities while in high school.” As a member of the HOSA Club, Ciuffini has also explored her interests in health careers through club-sponsored field trips and service opportunities.
The Health & Medicine Academy week is the second of a series of Academy Weeks that Joliet West librarians, Amy Lingafelter and Amy Walsh, will host in collaboration with academy coordinators throughout the year to promote career exploration among Joliet West High School students.
