Students of Service
Students of Service was started in 2008. Based on service, S.O.S. does everything it can to help out not only the school, but also the community. Some things done in the past were: participation in the Homecoming parade, decorated our designated hall for Homecoming week, conducted a school wide collection of hygiene and food products for the Daybreak shelter, volunteered at local nursing homes, and more recently, we attended a field trip to an organization named Feed My Starving Children where as a group, we were able to package food for children in third world countries; this event was not only rewarding, but also fun. At the end of the school year, we hosted a Cancer Awareness Week for the American Cancer Society and we collected over $250.00 in donations that week. In addition, we participated in Relay for Life which was one of the most rewarding events SOS has been a part of. When things came to an end, we (unofficially) raised over $1800.00 for the American Cancer Society. SOS plans on participating in Relay for Life next year as well.
The 2009-2010 school year started with SOS formally becoming an Interact Club with the Joliet Rotary Club. We are lucky to become a part of this because we are the only club in the Joliet area to become an Interact Club and with this, Students of Service and the Joliet Rotary Club look forward to working together on future service projects. Our first event of the year was the Aspire Inspire Backpack Drive. Students of Service collected 38 backpacks with more than half of them filled with school supplies, all of which will be sent to underprivileged children in other countries. Things we have planned for the upcoming holiday season are: Christmas caroling at nursing homes, volunteering at Morning Star Mission, adopting a family, and we also hope to adopt a room at our local shelter.
