The purpose of this program is to provide prevention activities, conduct interventions when substance abuse is suspected, coordinate services with local agencies, conduct support groups for students at risk, obtain training for staff, assist with development of new programs, collaborate with community agencies and write grants for continued funding.
Debbie Burroughs, Joliet West’s Student Assistance Program Coordinator, attended Eastern Illinois University (1981-1985) where she received a Bachelors of Science in Health Education and Community Health. Upon graduating, she was employed by Education Service Network (ESN) as an Attendance Caseworker and at Joliet Township High School as an evening school instructor which eventually became a full time teaching position at West Campus. While teaching, Ms. Burroughs was invited to attend Operation Snowball; a part of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) which sparked her interest in the SAP position that became available the following year. Ms. Burroughs received a Masters Degree in Educational Administration in 2002. Since, she has continued taking courses in education and addictions. While not at school, Ms. Burroughs enjoys spending time with her nieces, nephews and dogs and she also enjoys working out, jet skiing and boating.
