Parental involvement is a direct link to academic success for children and teens. How and why parents get involved will vary as their child moves from elementary into high school.
Because of this direct link to success, YESS thought it is important to provide information on what makes a parent and school relationship successful. On the website, www.projectappleseed.org, there is a Parental Involvement Checklist. All items on the checklist provide results for students, parents and schools if accomplished. These include the following:
#1 – Volunteering – Greater understanding of one another
#2 – Parenting – Home environment supported for learning
#3 – Communicating – More effective school-to-home and home-to-school communications
#4 – Learning at Home – Information and ideas for added learning at home
#5 – Decision Making – Include parents in decision-making
#6 – Collaborating with Community – Bring in resources to strengthen schools and support families.
Check out the resource tab for additional parent resources or contact Kelli Bettenhausen at 815-774-1602/ kbettenhausen@jths.org.
