Curriculum
GRADING
Beginning with the Class of 2009, all courses will count in determining a student’s grade point average. The use of No Grade Point Average (NGPA) and No Credit (NC) will be elminated. The three-tiered point system will be replaced by a two-tiered point system. For courses weighted at 1.0 and 1.2, they will be weighted as 1.0. For courses weighted at 1.4, they will be weighted as 1.2. In addition, the valedictorian and salutatorian recognition will be eliminated. The top 2% of the graduating class will be recognized.
For the Class of 2006, 2007 and 2008, a non-weighted GPA and class rank is calculated for each student. All courses earning credit, including NGPA courses will be included in the non-weighted GPA. The non-weighted GPA will be released to colleges requiring this calculation method as a part of their admission requirements.
Options:
1. Students enrolled in four academic subjects and Physical Education/Reserve Officer Training Corps/ Driver Education may elect to take one additional subject with a grade weight of 1.0 for no credit. However, a grade will be earned and recorded but excluded from the GPA. This option must be made during the first 10 days of each semester.
2. Students enrolled in summer school courses may elect to exclude some courses from grade point average computation. (See summer school instructor.)
3. Students in Physical Education, ROTC, or Driver Education may choose to eliminate the courses from GPA computation. This option must be made during the first 10 days of each semester.
The grading system used for nine-week and semester reports is as follows for all students:
| |
100 - 93 = A |
69 and Below = F |
| |
92 - 86 = B |
I = Incomplete |
| |
85 - 78 = C |
WP = Withdrawal Passing |
| |
77 - 70 = D |
|
Students receiving an “I” have two (2) weeks in which to complete the work. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher with regard to completion of course requirements. If the requirements are not completed within two weeks, the grade becomes an automatic “F”. Students withdrawing from a class AFTER the first grading period of a semester (mid-semester grading), will receive a “WP” if passing the class at the time of withdrawing and an “F” if failing at the time of withdrawal. Student
permanent records reflect semester grades only.
Progress Reports - Progress Reports will be mailed for all students at mid-quarter. It is the student’s responsibility to inform his/her parents. Every effort will be made to issue these reports to allow time for the sudent to raise his
grade prior to the issuance of report cards. However, students whose grades decline toward the end of the grading
period will also receive notice.
Weighted Grades - A weighted grade system is used at JTHS to compute grade point average (GPA) and class rank. Weighted grades take into account both student achievement and course difficulty. A grade weight is given each course based upon its relative difficulty.
Grades are assigned numeric equivalents as follows:
A = 4 points B = 3 points C = 2 points D = 1 point F = 0 points
