Curriculum
MATHEMATICS
The Joliet Township High Schools offer Mathematics through Calculus.
The comprehensive course offerings are at several levels from remedial
through honors.
Extracurricular activities center around the SICA Math Team competitions,
including the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE)
competition.
Mathematics is not just for mathematicians! Although Mathematics
is an important field of human knowledge by itself, it is an essential
tool in business (accounting and computer programming), in industry
(engineering, construction and estimating), in science (calculations,
measurement and statistics) and at home (budgets, taxes and purchasing).
The Mathematics curriculum has been designed so that any student
can take four years of Math that will be valuable to qualify for
a career while developing good thinking skills. In today's "high
tech" world, the need for people to have good math skills is
increasing.
Career Planning with Mathematics
If a student is considering a career that requires four or more
years of college and involves science, engineering, medicine, computers
or business, four years of Math should be taken in high school.
For careers which involve four or more years of college, but are
not scientific or technical, a minimum of three years of high school
Math may be sufficient. Many Illinois universities are making three
years of high school Math, beginning with Algebra, a minimum entry
requirement for all fields. Check with individual universities for
specific requirements and recommendations.
For students planning to work right after high school or planning
to attend a vocational training school or two-yearcollege, three
years of Math is advisable, especially if considering technical
or accounting-related occupations.
Early consultation with the counselor is recommended in order to
select the Math courses appropriate to career plans.
