Joliet Township High School students David Dillon, Alexus Trotter and Aaron Blankenship took home top awards at the Mt. Zion Youth Speaks Oratory Competition on January 14.

Youth Speaks is an oratory component of the Emergent Reading-Writer Program sponsored by the National Hook-up of Black Women, Inc. and Silver Cross Hospital.  The program is designed to create opportunities that promote youth participation in public speaking, comprehensive reading and fluent writing.

At the competition, Joliet Central High School student David Dillon placed first, Joliet West High Student Alexus Trotter placed second, and Joliet West High School student Aaron Blankenship placed third.

The Youth Speaks program recognizes that speech and debate sharpen students’ abilities to think, listen critically and articulate their thoughts with confidence.  It is a forum for peaceful discussion on matters pertaining to youth.

The MLK contest judges included Dr. Danny Cochran, Natalie Coleman, and Pastor Curtis Bryant.
