Joliet Central High School senior Amanda Alberico has been selected for the six-week fall internship with Illinois State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, beginning on September 13th. Her work will center around getting out the vote via phone, knocking on doors and other forms of communication.
Alberico is interested in studying International Business Marketing and International Relations and is involved in Rotary Club, Key Club, Human Relations Club, Senior Class Committee, and works part-time. She also enjoys studying Spanish and Finnish, and was an exchange student in Finland for her junior year through Rotary International.
She learned of the internship through her AP Government Teacher, Ms. Lisa Luangsomkham, and decided to learn more about the internship and apply. Not only would the internship provide her with a professional experience in high school, but she also saw it as an opportunity to put her thoughts into action.
“This internship allows me to stand for my beliefs and encourage my peers to be active politically,” said Alberico. “I've gone canvassing door-to-door and I call people asking what their concerns are on the state level and inform them of what our Senator is doing to address their concerns.”
When asked what advice she would give to fellow students interested in engaging in politics, she said, "When we look at things that are going on in our country, we should try to understand them and be informed, especially at this age. For students who want to get involved, I recommend talking to teachers, counselors, and our local government."
