DePaul University’s College of Education presented Joliet West High School teacher Tim DeBoer with the Celebrating Teachers Award at the Honors Convocation on June 8, 2017. The award honored six teachers who have dedicated their lives to the support, cultivation, and advancement of their students.

Through the Celebrating Teachers Initiative, the College of Education invites DePaul juniors and seniors to nominate a former K-12 instructor whom they feel significantly impacted his or her life. DeBoer was nominated by his former student Matthew Verive.

Additionally, the College of Education will be awarding a $250 monetary prize to Joliet West High School in Tim DeBoer’s honor.
DeBoer said, “I am beyond flattered that Matthew thought of me so highly as to nominate me and write a beautiful essay about his time in choir at Joliet West.  He went on to talk about how he has sought out choral opportunities in college thereby becoming a lifelong learner and lifelong musician—the often spoken goal of teachers.  I am very proud to have been Matthew’s teacher, it was truly a privilege, and it is always humbling to receive an honor like this from an institution like DePaul University.”

Dean Zionts, Dean of the College of Education, said they had three times as many nominees as they have had in the past. Reflecting on Dean Zionts’ speech, DeBoer said, “I was struck by a very important statement that Dean Zionts made when talking about the importance of teachers. He said ‘whenever you ask someone who has been an influence in their life, they always talk about a teacher’.  That stood out to me in a time in which tropes like ‘those who can’t do, teach’ or ‘teachers should be paid like the glorified babysitters that they are’ are bandied about.”

DeBoer offers the following words of advice to students interested in education: “The point I make to my students who are considering going into education is that you must find a way to love each student that you teach. You may not always like them, but you must remember each one is someone’s precious son or daughter, and they should be treated and cared for like they are your own.  If you do that, then you have a chance to teach knowledge.”

JTHS congratulations Tim DeBoer for his exemplary service and the contributions he has made to Joliet West’s students.
