On February 6, the Joliet West National Honor Society concluded its Christmas charity drive, benefitting young mothers in the Purple Project. NHS students were given baby bottles and asked to return them filled with change.  They also collected donations to help the young mothers, such as diapers and clothes. The results were very impressive. In partnership with the academy RoundTable and Student Council, they raised $650 dollars, collected 15 boxes of clothes, and donated 5 baskets filled with toys, games, and necessities for a new mother.

The charity drive was made possible through the National Honor Society’s partnership with the Purple Project. After tragically losing their daughter Alisha and granddaughter Ava Lucille, Sherry and Joe Anicich decided to honor their memory and legacy. Thus, the Purple Project was founded to extend love and hope to all people in need; their family’s motto is to ‘Choose love not hate.’ Since its founding, the purple Project has come to “provide grief support and services to parents and family members who have suffered the loss of a child.” along with sponsoring a baby drive in memory of Alisha and Ava Lucille

One of the Purple Project mothers, Deia, and her three children-Naryah, Chase, and Ava (5 days)- accompanied Sherry and Joe to the Joliet West Auditorium early Tuesday in a ceremony to accept the donations. What followed was an extremely emotional account of how Deia came to be in her current situation, and a resounding thank you from the mother.

James Papandria, the President of the National Honor Society, stated “I’m so grateful for the opportunity the Purple Project provided us. I’m in awe of the generosity of our members and honored to be able to make such an impact on the local community”.
