On Monday, November 14th, the Joliet West Library kicked off the Health & Medicine Academy Week with Vital Signs Day, in which they partnered with Salem Village Nursing Home to provide a unique experience for the Health Careers Classes.

“Our Joliet West Library connected with local health professionals to provide this great opportunity for our students.  This reinforces class lessons, and students are excited and engaged,” said Mary Spata, Health Careers teacher.

Professionals from the Careers of Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, Nursing, Dietary, and Health Administration were in the library demonstrating the skills and equipment they use to assess and help their patients.

“It’s great that we get to share what we do on a daily basis with the students. When I was in high school, we didn’t have this kind of opportunity,” said Hector Hernandez, Food Service Director at Salem Village Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center.

Students had the opportunity to learn how to use some of the health-related tools and technology and log their own vital signs.

“I enjoyed learning about the different health careers. The demonstrations helped me to consider exploring a career in respiratory therapy and working with older adults,” said Joliet West student Sequoia Grantham.
