Joliet West High School SoCA Club Supports Chemotherapy Patients

Some like to give, some like to volunteer, but students at Joliet West High School choose to do both as they support chemotherapy patients. Kristen Koppers, sponsor of Students of Community Advocacy (SoCA), put out a request through the use of social media and her school to collect items for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Without realizing how much of an impact social media has, bags of items were being dropped off in her classroom almost immediately. From the bags of items received, Koppers and her students separated the items by gender to make over forty chemo care bags to deliver to local treatment centers around Joliet/Morris area.
In addition to items in the bags, each bag is dedicated in memory of a person who lost the battle to cancer or in honor of someone who beat it giving others hope. Student captain, Katie Thontlin, created an excel spreadsheet where each bag was numbered with the dedicated ribbon. "We wanted each bag to have a special connection to the person receiving it," Koppers stated.
Those who receive a bag are able to log on to the SoCA website (http://www.jtwestsoca.weebly.com/) to enter a blog about the bag that was received along with the dedicated ribbon.
The Joliet West SoCA group is still collecting items and donations. If you would like to donate, items can be dropped off at Joliet West High School (atten. Kristen Koppers) or donations can be mailed to Joliet West High School (atten. Kristen Koppers) 401 N. Larkin Avenue, Joliet, IL 60435. Items that are currently needed can be found on their website.
