Procedures and Program Information

Procedures

  1. Home Language Survey-The home language survey is a survey we give to students that is required by state law. This is done at registration or upon enrollment and must be in every student’s file. The purpose of the survey is to find out if a language other than English is spoken at home. If a language other than English is spoken at home, than by law the student must be screened to see if they are in need of services.

  2. W-APT-is the WIDA screener. This is a test that we use to determine if a student is in need of ESL services, bilingual services, or both. It is administered orally by our testing coordinator and lead teacher, Ms. Lourdes Paramo.

  3. Once the results of the test have been determined, a recommendation for placement is made and the parents are formally notified of their options.

  4. Once in the program, a student can receive instruction in all graduation requirements in Spanish as well as various levels of ESL classes and ESL labs. ESL classes are designed to be intensive in nature and focus on English Language Acquisition. ESL lab classes correspond to the ESL class and are designed to provide literacy support to the students.   It is very common for our students to be in ESL classes but receiving their content area instruction in English. The majority of students in the program are in both ESL and bilingual classes.

  5. Students are assessed in their language proficiency and growth annually with the WIDA ACCESS test. Joliet Township has been recognized for achieving adequate yearly progress in language proficiency growth expectations.

  6.  A student may graduate from the ESL/Bilingual program, but we are meant to be a transitional program. Once we feel that the student has achieved adequate proficiency in English we evaluate a host of other factors before we exit the students. Once our students are exited into the mainstream, they are generally very successful. Law requires us to provide services for a minimum of three years. After five years in the program, we are not legally required to continue services.
