Senior Leadership Advisory Program (SLAP)

Mission Statement

The Senior Leadership Advisory Program was created to acclimate freshman students to Joliet West High School with the support of positive senior leader student role models who provide strategies to encourage a successful high school career.  SLAP leaders will support freshman students while refining their own leadership skills, thus fostering the relationship between advisory teachers, SLAP leaders, and advisory students to better implement the District’s Mission Statement and the vision of the advisory program.

Becoming an Effective SLAP Leader

What is a SLAP leader?

SLAP leaders are responsible for leading and administering freshman advisory activities.  SLAP leaders will keep communication flowing, act as good role models, include students who feel “left out”, assist those who seem troubled or uncomfortable, keep students “on track”, organize materials, keep advisory teachers informed, and insure advisory activities are implemented.

A SLAP leader must do his/her best to reach out to all students in his/her assigned advisory.  It is important for SLAP students to do his/her best to understand, respect, and listen to all students in the freshman advisory. SLAP leaders must avoid allowing his/her own values hinder his/her effectiveness as a leader.   It is essential that each SLAP leader model and promote positive behavior in and outside of the advisory classroom.
