JC Engineers recognized during May Board meeting

During the JTHS Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, May 16th, the JC Engineers were recognized for 3D printing a prosthetic arm for a young boy in need.
Last year, Joliet Central High School’s JC Engineers Club used 3D printing to create a prosthetic hand in conjunction with a non-for-profit company called Enable. This hand was sent into Enable for approval and then used for parts. After this approval, the club was on a waiting list to get paired with a child in need.
Recently, Enable changed their procedures to allow approved members the ability to create a “Chapter”. This chapter is then pinned on a digital map on their website, and anyone who is in need can access this map to see nearby chapters that can help them.
Mr. West’s students went through this process, which included an online face-to-face meeting, and they were approved as a chapter.
A little while after creating this chapter, the club was approached by a mother who wanted to see if they could print a hand for her son, Ashton, who is missing the upper portion of his hand.
Students used measurements provided by the mother to create a scaled 3D model. Next, they 3D printed a prototype to see if the scale and measurements were correct. The family came to Joliet Central High School over spring break to test out the prototype and make sure it fit correctly.
Students also asked the child what his favorite colors and hobbies were to see if they could customize the hand based on his interests. Upon learning that the child is a fan of the Call of Duty video games, the JC Engineers put the game’s logo on top of the hand and 3D printed the parts in his favorite colors, blue and black.
Having finished 3D printing all the parts of the hand and assembling it, they most recently met with the family on Thursday, May 18th, to present him the finished product.
